Innovation & Implementation Center
The Innovation & Implementation Center helps clinical teams introduce AI into practice safely, meet regulatory requirements, and maintain systems over time.
Mandate
The IIC is Heidelberg and Mannheim’s core unit for clinical and research teams who want to introduce an AI system into patient care. Our mandate is to guide these systems safely from initial idea through to routine clinical use, and to keep them under review afterward. We combine technical, regulatory, and clinical expertise so that AI systems entering the clinic are technically sound, legally compliant, and demonstrably safe and effective for patients and clinicians.
How we work
We begin by defining the clinical use case and assessing how ready the AI system is for use. We then guide its technical development, establish its regulatory classification, and plan its implementation.
When the system is ready for evaluation, we work with the clinical unit to validate its analytical and clinical performance. We then support controlled clinical investigations, integration into clinical workflows, and ongoing quality monitoring. After introduction, we continue to review performance, safety, and effects on workflows, reassessing the system whenever clinical requirements change.

Team
The IIC combines clinical, technical, implementation, and regulatory expertise.
